Splish Splash!

Our Toastmaster Deb had an inventive theme tonight as we pulled off another great Power Speakers meeting.

Two milestones were reached tonight: Irene Hunter achieved her Competent Communicator status, and Erik Niemonen became an Advanced Communicator Silver! Congratulations to both of you, well deserved.

Thank you all for the kind feedback on my presentation "Outside Our Club", it was fun to deliver to it to the Power Speakers membership.

The Table Topics Master Dorothy switched it up a bit and had us practicing Imitative Harmony with words drawn from a glass jar - who knew there were so many 'words that sound like what they describe' in the English language!

Earth Day

Did you know that 70% of the garbage in the landfill right now could have been recycled!? 70%! That was just one of the startling facts our Toastmaster for the evening, Norma, revealed.

Irene introduced us to the 2007 Oxford American Dictionary Word Of The Year : locavore (a person that eats local) and gave a great persuasive speech on why we should all try to eat locally. Saying among other things that locally produced produce is bred for taste, rather than transport.

We also got a new member in Mr Dave Belleau - I'm sure he'll be a great addition to the Power Speakers. Until next week...

It was also great to get a visit from Wilson, a Toastmaster from San Diego!

And finally. a warm welcome to new members Jessie and Hammel!

Baseball

The theme chosen by our Toastmaster Erik this week was baseball. The meeting was full of interesting facts and anecdotes about one of North American's favourite past times.

It was great to see Jessie and Hammel revisit us, both of them gave great table topic mini speeches. Hala was also a most welcome guest, she gave a wonderful table topics speech as well.

"No We Can't" by Jayashree was a funny and entertaining look at the challenges she and her husbnd faced in the swimming pool. That speech was her first from an advanced manual, boo ya! Irene communicated the importance of good nutrition with "Our Daily Meals", to finish her 7th speech from the Competent Comunicator manual.

And last but not least, Jon Lim became an official Power Speaker, welcome dude! You'll go a long way I'm sure.

Area 16 Int'l Speech & Evaluation Contest

The Contest was a smashing success, and what a turnout! We had Toastmasters from the Chatterpillars, WEBA, TNT all in one place. Add in the judges and program assistants, and there were over 30 people, it was great!

There were some great speeches:

Ilan Clemens:
Spencer Beech: The Best Day You Will Ever Have
Tricia MaCaughan: Happily Divorced Ever After
Jayashree Ramaswami: I Am Canadian

The test speaker was Tamara Lehner, and she gave a great speech about natural medicine.

Evaluators:

Jayashree Ramaswami
Cynthia Cheung
Ilan Clemens
Sharon Maclise

A number of people remarked that any of the speeches/evaluations could have won - they were all excellent. But in the end...

Area 16's Best Speaker for spring 2009 is: Jayashree Ramaswami!
Area 16's Best Evaluator for spring 2009 is: Sharon Maclise!

Congratulations!

Toys and other playthings.

As our Toastmaster tonight, Deb's theme of Toys and other playthings was a great way to take us back to our childhoods.

Dorothy gave an eloquent toast about the importance of toys in life, Irene gave her 8th speech from the Competent Communicator manual (Visual Aids) entitled "Stressbusters!", where she used numerous props to tell us the many benefits of walking the dog and how it reduces our stress.

Our session was by Julio who explained to us www.meetup.com, it's pros and cons, and how we might use it to increase our membership. We will vote on whether to pay to join at the next business meeting...hopefully we have quorum!

As usual, Table Topics was very entertaining, with our guest John telling us about his childhood with Lego and how back in tha' day we didn't have this fancy 'branded' Lego. Bik used his trademark TT (Table Topics) style to tell us about his unhealthy infatuation with Nintendo.

Tune in next week for the Area 16 Int'l Speech & Evaluation Contest - hosted by us! Check it out:

International Speech and Evaluation Contest!

This past Wednesday was our yearly Toastmasters International Speech and Evaluation Contest. I've been to many contests in the past, and I still enjoy going.

Julio gave a great speech entitled "Synthetic Happiness" in which he spoke of ways we can find true happiness in life.

Irene spoke powerfully about all the whimsical chemicals that roll around in our heads, and Jayashree gave a great talk about what makes her Canadian.

For our evaluation contest, our test Speaker Mike presented about a number of scientific studies that explored the feeling of disgust, after which 3 evaluators (Greg, Ann, and Jayashree) gave the best evaluations they could.

In the end, the winner of both contest was the talented Jayashree, very well done! Quite impressive , not least considering she's one of the busiest Power Speakers outside of our meetings!

It was great to see so many people in our room, and I would be remiss not to thank the Judges, and all the program assistants for coming together to make the Contest a success, good job team!!
